C416

1. C416 is a 166-plant synthetic variety resulting from phenotypic recurrentselection for. resistance to Scierotinia crown and stem rot Parental germplasmtraces to ABT 400 SCL,Ovation and WL 332 SR. Approximate germplasm sourcecontributions are M. falcata (6%),Ladak (19%), M. varia (24%), Turkistan(11%), Flemish (3 90/6), and Chilean (1%).

2. C416 is adapted for use in the north central and east central regionsof the United States. C416 has been yield tested in Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

3. Flower color of C416 at syn2 approximates 100% purple with a traceof variegated and cream. The fall dormancy of C416 is similar to Legend (Class4).

4. C416 has high resistance to anthracnose (race 1), bacterial wilt, Fusariumwilt, Phytophthoraroot rot, Aphanomyces root rot (race 1) and blue alfalfaaphid-, and resistance to Verticilliumwilt, Scierotinia crown and stem rot,and pea aphid. Reaction to spotted alfalfa aphid, stemnematode and root knotnematode has not been adequately tested.

5. Breeder seed (syn1) was produced in 1997 on 166 plants under cage isolationat Bakersfield,California. Sufficient foundation (syn2) seed will be producedfor the expected life of the variety and will be maintained by W-L Research. One generation of breeder (syn1), two generations offoundation (syn2 or 3),and three generations of certified (syn2, 3 or 4) seed are recognized. Themaximum permitted length of stand for foundation and certified seed fieldsare three and fiveyears, respectively. Foundation seed must be produced above40 degrees North latitude.Production of syn3 foundation seed requires consentof the breeder.

6. Certified seed will be marketed in 2000.

7. It is undecided whether application will be made for Plant VarietyProtection.

8. The information in this application can be turned over to the PVP office.

9. Experimental designation: C416
