W201

1. W201 is a 96-plant synthetic variety resulting from phenotypic recurrent selection for highforage quality. Parental germplasm traces to Dart and Promise. Approximate germplasm, sourcecontributions are M. falcata (9%), Ladak (19%), M varia (24%), Turkistan (14%), and Flemish (34%).

2. W201 is adapted for use in the north central and east central regions of the United States.W201 has been yield tested in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

3. Flower color of W201 at syn2 approximates 100% purple with a trace of variegated and white. The fall dormancy of W201 is similar to Legend (Class 4).

4. W201 has high resistance to bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora rootrot, Aphanomyces root rot (race 1) and pea aphid, and resistance to anthracnose (race 1).Reaction to blue alfalfa aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid, stem nematode and root knot nematode hasnot been adequately tested.

5. Breeder seed (syn1) was produced in 1994 on 96 plants under cage isolation at Warden,Washington. Sufficient foundation (syn2) seed will be produced for the expected life of thevariety and will be maintained by W-L Research. One generation of breeder (syn1), twogenerations of foundation (syn2 or 3) and three generations of certified (syn2, 3 or 4) seed arerecognized. The maximum permitted length of stand for foundation and certified seed fields arethree and five years, respectively. Foundation seed must be produced above 40 degrees Northlatitude. Production of syn3 foundation seed requires consent of the breeder.

6. Certified seed will be marketed in 2000.

7. It is undecided whether application will be made for Plant Variety Protection.

8. The information in this application can be turned over to the PVP office.

9. Experimental designation: W201
