CW 55058
1 CW 55058 is a synthetic variety with 180 parent plants. Parent plants were selected forpersistence and vigor following two years of close continuous grazing with both cattle and sheepat Woodland, California. Parentage of CW 55058 traces to the following germplasm sources:OK 49, Atene, Shenandoah, Cimarron, and miscellaneous Cal/West Seeds breeding populations.Approximate germplasm. source contributions are as follows: M.falcata (3%), Ladak (30/6), M.varia (15%), Turkistan (20/o), Flemish (27%), and Chilean (50%).
2. CW 55058 is adapted to the southwest and moderately winter hardy intermountain areas ofthe U. S . and is intended for use in the southwest and moderately winter hardy intermountainareas of the U.S., Argentina, South Africa, and Australia. CW 55058 has been tested inCalifornia.
3. CW 55058 is a moderately dormant variety with fall dormancy similar to FD class 5 checkvarieties. Flower color observed in the syn2 generation is approximately 99% purple, 1%variegated, with a trace of white, cream, and yellow. CW 55058 has tolerance to intensivegazing with high stocking rates similar to the tolerant check variety Alfagraze.
4. CW 55058 has high resistance to Fusarium wilt and blue alfalfa aphid, with resistance toanthracnose (race 1), pea aphid, spotted alfalfa aphid, and stem nematode, and moderateresistance to Phytophthora root rot, Reaction to bacterial wilt, Verticillium wilt, Aphanomycesroot rot (race 1), and root knot nematode has not been adequately tested.
5. Seed increase of CW 55058 is on a limited generation basis with one generation of breederand two generations of the foundation and certified seed classes. Breeder (syn1), foundation(syn2 or 3), and certified (syn3 or 4) classes will be recognized. Production of syn3 foundationseed requires consent of the breeder. Breeder seed was produced under cage isolation near Woodland, California, in 1995. Sufficient foundation seed for the projected life of the varietywill be maintained by Cal/West Seeds. Stands of foundation and certified seed fields are limitedto three and six years, respectively.
6. Certified seed of CW 55058 will be available in 2000.
