Webfoot MPR

1. Webfoot MRP is a synthetic variety with 138 parent plants. Thirty-one Phytophthora--root-rot-resistant selections from the variety Webfoot were crossed to 76 plants from the varieties Blazer XL(42) and Zenith (34) which had been screened for conibined resistance to anthracnose and Aphanomyces root rot. The 138 parent plants were selected from this cross for conibined resistance to Verticilliwn wilt1 Aphanomycesroot rot and anthracnose. These multiple pest resistant selections were intercrossed in the greenhouse in 1989 to produce Syn.1 seed. The estimated percent of germplasm sources are: H. falcata (10), Ladak (8), H. varia (45), Turkistan (6), Flemish (30), and Chilean (1).

2. Webfoot MPR is adapted to the North Central United States. It has been tested in Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan and is intended for use in the North Central US.

3. Webfoot MPR is a moderately dormant variety similar in dormancy to Saranac. Flower color in the Syn 2 generation was 68% purple, 32% variegated and a trace of cream, yellow and white.

4. Webfoot MPR has high resistance to bacterial wilt, anthracnose (race 1), Phytophthora root rot, Verticillium wilt, and Fusariuni wilt. It is resistant to Aphanomyces root rot and pea aphid. Reaction to stem nematode, spotted alfalfa aphid, blue alfalfa aphid, and root-knot nematode has not been determined.

5. Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generation of breeder and two generations each of foundation and certified seed classes. Breeder seed (Syn 2), foundation (Syn 3), and certified (Syn 4) classes will be recognized. Production of Syn 3 foundation seed requires the consent of the breeder. Breeder seed (Syn 2) was produced in field isolation near Woodland, California in 1990. Sufficient foundation seed for the projected life of the variety will be maintained by Forage Genetics. There is no limitation on length of seed fields of foundation (Syn 3) or certified (Syn 4) seed classes.

6. Certified seed will be marketed in 1994.

7. Plant Variety Protection will not be applied for.
