VS77S

1.   VS77S is a 7 clone synthetic variety. Parental clones were selected from an experimental population (UWA) based on extensive clonal, S1 and PX progeny tests in Wisconsin, and Idaho for winterhardiness, forage yield, seed yield and resistance to one or more of the following pests: bacterial wilt, Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, Aphanomyces root rot, and spotted alfalfa aphid. Population UWA traces to Aphanomyces-resistant selections from the cultivars 2980, PRO-CUT 2, Bronco and V8655 from a University of Wisconsin disease trial. Approximate germplasm source contribution are: M. falcata - 8%, Ladak - 6%, M. varia - 25%, Turkistan - 5%, Flemish - 53%, Chilean - 3%

2.   VS775 is intended for use in the north central, northeastern and northwestern U.S. for hay, haylage, greenchop or dehy production. It has been tested in Iowa, Wisconsin, Idaho and New York.

3.   VS775 is a moderately dormant variety with fall dormancy similar to Saranac. Flower color is approximately 78% purple and 22% varigated with a trace of white, yellow, and cream.

4.   V5775 has high resistance to Fusarium wilt, bacterial wilt, pea aphid, Phytophthora root rot, Aphanomyces root rot; resistance to anthracnose, Verticillium wilt and spotted alfalfa aphid. Reaction to sterm nematode and blue alfalfa aphid has not been adequately tested.

5.   Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generation each of breeder, foundation, and certified seed classes. Breeder (Syn 1), foundation (Syn 2), and certified (Syn 3) classes will be recognized. Breeder seed was produced in isolation in Idaho with sufficient seed maintained by Vista for the life of the variety. Seed increase is on a one generation basis for each class with stand limitations of 1, 2, and 6 years for the breeder, foundation, and certified classes respectively.

6.   Certified seed will be available in 1991.

7.   No decision has been made concerning Plant Variety Protection.
