VIP

1.   VIP is a synthetic variety with 1058 parental plants. Parental plants were screened for resistance to one or more of the following pests: Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, or pea aphid. Source materials were derived from LL3409 (50%), a multipest resistant experimental germplasm and LL3387 (50%), and can be traced to a hardy germplasm pool (30%), Elevation (24%), Trident (15%), Sparta (10%), Saranac AR (10%), Apollo (5%), and Peak (6%). An estimate of the percentage of the major germplasm sources that contributed to the genetic constitution of this variety is: M. falcata (6%), Ladak (22%), M. varia (26%), Turkistan (8%), Flemish (33%), and Chilean (5%).

2.   VIP is intended for use in the northern U.S. for hay, haylage, greenchop, and dehy production. It has been tested in Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado, Michigan, and Idaho.

3.   Fall dormancy is similar to Ranger. Flower color is approximately 50% purple, 48% variegated, 1% white, and 1% yellow.

4.   VIP has high resistance to bacterial wilt, pea aphid, resistance to Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, anthracnose, Fusarium wilt, moderate resistance to spotted alfalfa aphid and stem nematode, and low resistance to the blue alfalfa aphid.

5.   Seed increase is on a limited generation basis with one generation each of breeder, foundation, and certified seed classes. Breeder (Syn 1), foundation (Syn 2), and certified (Syn 3) classes will be recognized. Breeder seed was produced in isolation in Idaho. Stands of seed production are limited to 1, 2, and 6 years for the breeder, foundation, and certified classes respectively.

6.   Certified seed will be available in 1989.

7.   No decision has been made concerning Plant Variety Protection.
