1.   SX-l0 originated from selections that resisted heaving in plantings of Vernal and Ranger and crossed to Rambler selections. From 174 crosses 3000 F1 plants were screened for plant height, vigor, leafiness, crown width, leafhopper resistance and branching and lateral roots. Selections were then intercrossed. Seed from this population was planted in the nursery and 14 colonies selected for strong root system. Breeder seed is produced in isolation on cuttings from the 14 parental clones.


2.   Tests were conducted in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Indiana, Kansas and North and South Dakota. Primary purpose is intended for hay and pasture usage. Areas of merchandising will be primarily in North and South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.


3.   Flower color is predominantly purple with some yellow and white blossoms, regrowth after cutting and fall dormancy is generally uniform with fall dormancy similar to Vernal. This variety has a greater development of laterally branching roots. Tolerance to downy mildew and leafhopper yellowing.


4.   SX-l0 shall be in the limited generation sequence with one generation each of Breeder, Foundation and Certified Classes. Certified seed is the first generation increase from Foundation or Breeder seed. Foundation seed will be produced north of the 37th parallel.


5.   Certified seed will be first available in 1975.


6.   Not planned for certification under the Plant Variety Protection Act.
