1. IK 8919 is a synthetic variety consisting of 104 parent plants. Approximately 69%of the parents originated from mass selection based on good agronomic characteristics of 2 to 8 year old hay fields in 1988 in the southern Sacramento Valley, CA. Seed was produced in 3 cages. About 31% of the plants resulted from seedlings screened and selected for Phytophthora root rot resistance in 1988 and planted in 1 cage. Seedlings of each cage were selected for anthracnose resistance (race 1) and produced breeder seed under cage in 1989. The parentage traces to Royal GT 58, Maricopa, Cargill 184, WL 318, Southern Special Meteor, Pike, and 167. The approximate percentages of germplasm sources are M. falcata 1, Ladak 1, M. varia 4, Turkistan 18, Flemish 9, Chilean 4, Peruvian 1, Indian 6, African 2, Arabian 0, and unknown 54.
2. It is adapted to the southern Sacramento Valley, CA where it has been tested and is intended for use.
3. The flower color is about 99% purple and 1% variegated. The fall dormancy is comparable to Mesilla.
4. IK 8919 has high resistance to Fusarium wilt and resistance to anthracnose (Race 1), bacterial wilt, Phytophthora root rot and Spotted alfalfa aphid. It has low resistance to pea aphid. Its reaction to stem nematode, blue alfalfa aphid,Verticillium wilt, Aphanomyces root rot,(Race 1) and root knot nematode has not been determined.
5. Seed will be increased as breeder, foundation and certified Breeder seed was produced under isolation cage in 1989 near Woodland, CA. Breeder seed will produce foundation seed (syn 2) in the southern Sacramento or San JoaquinValleys, CA or similar areas. The breeder will have the option to establish foundation fields using syn 2 seed. Certified seed (syn 3 or 4) will be produced from foundation seed in Ca, ID or other similar areas. The stand limitation for breeder, foundation and certified seed shall be 1, 4, and 6 years, respectively. Sufficient breeder or foundation seed will be maintained for the life of the variety by I. K. Seed Research, Inc.
6. Certified seed will be offered for sale in 1998.
7. Application for Plant Variety Protection has not been determined.
8. This application may be given to the PVP office.
