85A25
1. 85A25 is a 110 clone synthetic variety. Parent clones were selected from plants screened for Phytophthora root rot resistance from the following sources: Apollo II, Maxim, two FFR breeding lines tracing to Anstar, Answer, and Maxim, and one FFR breeding line tracing predominately to European varieties and FFR breeding lines that had been screened for Verticillium wilt resistance. Estimates of germplasm sources are: M. falcata (2%), Ladak (2%), M. varia (27%), Turkistan (5%), Flemish (50%), Chilean (1%), and unknown (13%). 2. 85A25 is intended for use in hay, haylage, greenchop and dehydration production from the upper midwest to the mid-south. It has been tested in Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia. 3. 85A25 is a moderately dormant variety similar to Saranac. Flower color is approximately 95% purple and 5% variegated, with a trace of cream, yellow, and white. 4. 85A25 is resistant to Phytophthora root rot, bacterial wilt, Fusarium wilt, and Verticillium wilt; moderately resistant to anthracnose (Race 1); and has low resistance to spotted alfalfa aphids and stem nematodes. It is susceptible to the blue alfalfa aphid, and has not been tested for resistance to pea aphids. 5. Seed increase is limited to one generation each of breeder (Syn 1) and foundation (Syn 2) classes, and two generations of certified class (Syn 2 or 3). Breeder seed sufficient for the life of the variety was produced in isolation in Washington and is maintained in cold storage by FFR Cooperative. Foundation seed will be produced from breeder seed; certified seed may be produced from breeder or foundation seed. Length of stand for breeder and foundation seed production is 3 years, and 6 years for certified production. Breeder and foundation seed production are limited to the northwestern United States. 6. Certified seed would first be available in 1990. 7. No decision concerning Plant Variety Protection has been made. 8. Information in this application may be furnished to the Plant Variety Protection office.
