84B36
(Experimental Desig.)

1.   84B36 is a synthetic cultivar with 94 parent plants. Parent plants were greenhouse Phytophthora resistant selections of the following: Apollo II (16), DK 135 (14), Maris Kabul (9), Maris Sabilt (2), Resis (3), Trumpetor (7), Vector (10), Vernema (8), Vertus (4), WL 314 (4), and WL 316 (17). Approximately 1200 total initial plants were screened. Approximate germplasm sources are: 4% M. falcata, 4% Ladak, 16% M. varia, 6% Turkistan, 59% Flemish, 9% Chilean, and 2% unknown.

2.   Proposed areas of adaptation are the northern midwest and parts of the intermountain west. General use will be hay, greenchop, and dehydrated alfalfa. It has been tested in California, Idaho, and Michigan.

3.   Flower color is approximately 99% purple and 1% variegated with traces of cream, white, and yellow. 84B36 is moderately dormant with fall dormancy similar to Saranac.

4.   84B36 has high resistance to Fusarium wilt. It has resistance to anthracnose, Verticillium wilt, Phytophthora root rot, stem nematode, and spotted alfalfa aphid. It has moderate resistance to bacterial wilt. Reaction to pea aphid and blue alfalfa aphid is unknown.

5.   Sufficient breeder seed (Syn 1) was produced in 1984 in an isolation cage near Woodland, California to last the life of the variety. It is maintained by Plant Genetics, Inc. in an environmentally controlled storage. Foundation seed (Syn 2 or 3) may only be produced from breeder or Syn 2 foundation seed at the breeder's option. Certified seed (Syn 2, 3, or 4) may be produced from either breeder or foundation seed. Stand duration will be 1, 4, and 4 years for breeder, foundation, and certified seed fields, respectively.

6.   Certified seed will be available in 1989.

7.   Application for PVP is undecided.

8.   Information may be given to the PVP office.
