Minutes from the 12th Eastern Forage Improvement Conference
Business Meeting held at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD
Monday, July 14, 1997


The meeting was called to order at 11:00 a.m. by chair Julie Hansen

Real Michaud made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes from the last EFIC meeting due to their to the membership. The motion was adopted.

Gary Bauchan, Permanent Secretary EFIC, reported that the balance in the EFIC account remains the same as the last meeting, $342.00.

He made an announcement concerning the 35th North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference which was held on June 16 through 20, 1996 in Oklahoma City, OK. There were over 150 participants who attended the meeting. The meeting consisted of 2 days of oral and poster presentations,  day tour and concluded with a post conference tour.

Gary Bauchan announced that the NAAIC has a Web Site. The address is: http://www.naaic.org Information on this joint meeting of the EFIC and the Northeastern Branch of the American Society of Agronomy was available at this web site.

The following report was submitted from the resolutions committee, consisting of Real Michaud (chair) and Dick Coffman.
Be it resolved that the 12th EFIC joint meeting with the Northeastern Branch of the American Society of Agronomy at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland, on July 13-16, 1997 convey their sincere appreciation to the Executive Committee, Julie Hansen (Chair), Ralph Martin (Vice Chair) and Gary Bauchan (Executive Secretary) and the Organizing Committee Charles Mulchi (University of Maryland) and Gary Bauchan (USDA-ARS). We extend a special thanks to Charles Mulchi and the staff at the University of Maryland for interesting and informative crops and natural resources tours at the USDA-ARS, Beltsville, Maryland and Wye Farm, Wye, Maryland. We also wish to thank Gary Bauchan and the staff at the USDA-ARS in Beltsville, Maryland for their interesting and informative forages tours. Appreciation is also extended to the contributors of the oral presentations about forage improvement and to all other participants involved in making the meeting informative and memorable. Be it resolved that we, the participants in the conference, extend our sincere appreciation to these individuals and organizations for making the conference at the University of Maryland so productive and enjoyable.
This motion was seconded and unanimously approved.



The nominations committee, consisting of Julie Hansen (chairman), Scott Harkcom and Paul Nadeau, proposed the following slate of officers for the 1999 EFIC:

Chair: Ralph Martin, Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada
Vice-Chair: Marvin Hall, Penn. State University, State College, PA

There were no further nominations from the floor and the above executive was approved unanimously.

An invitation from Ralph Martin from the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada has been extended to the group. Meeting Dates: June 20 - 23, 1999.

There was no new business.

The outgoing Chairman, Julie Hansen, transferred the office to Yousef Papadopoulos who was standing in for Ralph Martin. He thanked Julie for her efforts as chair. Yousef adjourned the meeting with the absence of no further business at 11:30 a.m.
